FAQ
FAQs
Can I fix this dog fencing to existing wooden posts or a metal frame myself?
Yes, and the European manufacturing process means the roll runs perfectly straight with very little run-out, which makes fixing onto timber, metal T-posts, or an existing frame straightforward. Hammer-in U-shaped staples or a staple tacker work well for wooden posts; cable ties or tie wire are a good choice for metal posts or frameworks. Both are available to order directly from Mesh Direct alongside the mesh.
Will my dog be able to squeeze through or push the holes out of shape in this fencing?
The holes measure 50mm x 50mm (2 inches square) which is too small for dogs to get their heads through, and the 2mm wire holds firm under pressure without bending or distorting. Because this is welded mesh rather than woven, the joints are fixed into position which means that the hole stays square. For very large dogs, or a dog that is particularly strong, you may want to opt for a slightly thicker wire for additional strength.
Is 2mm wire mesh strong enough to contain a large dog?
For most large breeds, yes - including dogs like Labradors, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers. A 2mm thick wire is strong enough to prevent the mesh from being pushed, bent, or forced through in a way that lighter-gauge products do not. Wire mesh with a thinner wire has a smaller contact area on the welds where the wires cross, which risks the welds being broken under pressure. The larger weld contact area with a 2mm thick wire is much stronger, which is why this is the statutory recommended specification for dog kennels. If your dog is a particularly powerful breed, such Rottweilers, Huskies, or Great Danes then Mesh Direct stocks a heavier gauge version with thicker wire that we would recommend for the extra strength and rigidity.
Will galvanised wire mesh rust if I leave it outside permanently?
This mesh is manufactured to European Standard EN 10223-4 and provides excellent rust resistance in outdoor conditions. For most UK garden installations the mesh will perform reliably for a number of years without any additional treatment or coating.
Which height of dog fencing should I choose for my garden?
Three heights are available: 1m (3ft 4in), 1.2m (4ft), and 1.5m (5ft). The 1m roll suits smaller or older dogs unlikely to jump, the 1.2m works for most medium breeds, and the 1.5m is the right choice for athletic or larger dogs where jumping is a real concern. The 1m and 1.2m rolls are each 25m long; the 1.5m roll is 15m.
Can I cut this dog fencing to size on site?
Yes. The 2mm wire cuts cleanly with a pair of large diagonal wire cutters rated for wire over 1.6mm, which is the specification Mesh Direct recommends for this gauge. Standard garden scissors or tin snips will not cut cleanly through 2mm wire. At Mesh Direct we stock the appropriate wire cutters alongside the fencing if you need them.
