Rat Mesh
We offer rodent mesh in both a stainless steel and galvanized finish with a 6mm x 6mm hole, perfect for keeping out both rats and mice. Our galvanized rodent mesh has a thicker 0.8mm wire to prevent rats from breaking through. As stainless steel is a harder material, our welded stainless steel rat and mouse mesh has a 0.7mm thick wire which is perfect for rodent protection. We also offer a woven stainless steel option with a 1.56mm hole, again this is excellent for keeping out both rats and mice.

Description
All of the product options on this product page are perfect for rodent protection, and are used by pest control specialists. The 6mm x 6mm hole is the industry standard for keeping out mice, and the options on this product page also offer a stronger material than traditional mouse proof mesh in order to keep out rats
Where do you need to install rodent mesh?Using our rodent mesh is the best way to prevent rodents from invading your home without having to use traps or chemicals/poison that could potentially be a risk to your children or pets. There are a few places around the home you might need to think about installing rodent mesh such as, soffits, loft spaces, vents, air bricks, gaps around doors/windows and any small cracks/gaps in the foundations/brickwork.
Which rodent mesh do I need?At Mesh Direct we offer rodent mesh in both a stainless steel and galvanized finish with a 6mm x 6mm hole, as well as a woven stainless mesh with a 1.98mm hole size, perfect for keeping out both rats and mice. Our galvanized rodent mesh option has a thicker heavy duty 0.8mm wire to prevent rats from breaking through. As stainless steel is a harder material, our stainless steel rat and mouse mesh has a 0.7mm thick wire which is perfect for rodent protection.
What is the difference between stainless steel and galvanized? Our Galvanized welded mesh extra heavy 6mm x 6mm with a 0.8mm thick wire offers a hot dipped galvanized finish, which offers excellent rust resistance. Stainless steel is a harder material than mild steel, which makes it ideal for rat and mouse protection in the home, office or factory. Stainless steel offers the highest level of rust resistance. Both our stainless steel and galvanized rodent mesh are easy to bend and will hold its shape once formed. They are also easy to cut using our aviation cutters, so you can get the right shape for your job.
What do you require to install rodent mesh? This of course depends on where you are looking to install the rodent mesh but typically you would need; Mesh Direct rodent mesh, a pair of gloves to protect your hands from any sharp edges of the mesh, a pair of wire cutters and staples/staple gun or screws and washers with wall plugs/anchors (drill if you are installing to an internal/external wall).
Make sure you measure the space you are covering and cut the mesh with a margin to ensure you have the right amount you need. You can then attach the mesh in place using the staples/screws. The main thing is to ensure that the product covers the area required and is flush to where you are installing, ensuring that there are no gaps for the potential unwanted pests to push through.
If you are unsure on the best way to install the rodent mesh for your situation, then we would always advise speaking to a professional to ensure an effective installation.

FAQ
FAQs
What is stainless steel welded rat mesh used for?
Stainless steel welded rat mesh is used to block the entry points rats and mice use to get into buildings - soffits, loft vents, air bricks, gaps around doors and windows, and cracks in brickwork or foundations. Grade 304 stainless steel is a great choice for outdoor and exposed locations where the mesh will face damp, rain, and harsh weather conditions. It is the same specification used by pest control professionals for domestic and commercial rodent proofing.
What is galvanized rat mesh used for?
Galvanized rat mesh is used to block rat and mouse entry points in residential and commercial building, outbuildings such as sheds, animal enclosures. The 0.8mm wire is the heaviest gauge of the 6mm x 6mm hole welded mesh options, manufactured specifically to resist rats gnawing through it, and the small hole will also keep out mice. The hot-dipped galvanized finish provides excellent rust resistance in outdoor conditions.
What is the difference between stainless steel rat mesh and galvanized rat mesh?
Whilst galvanized rat mesh offers great rust resistance and is an excellent choice for outdoor projects, stainless steel is the ultimate anti-corrosion material and provides the longest lasting protection. Stainless steel is a harder material than galvanized steel, and so a 0.7mm thick wire combined with a 6mm x 6mm hole is strong enough to keep out both rats and mice. To prevent rats from chewing through 6mm x 6mm welded mesh in a galvanized steel, you need a slightly thicker 0.8mm thick wire.
Is the 0.7mm stainless steel wire strong enough to stop rats, or should I choose the 0.8mm galvanized?
Combined with the small 6mm x 6mm hole size, both will stop rats - the difference is material hardness, not wire thickness alone. Grade 304 stainless steel is harder than the mild steel used in the galvanized option, which compensates for the 0.1mm difference in wire thickness. The galvanized mesh uses a heavier 0.8mm wire to offset the fact that mild steel is softer. If you are using a larger hole size to stop rats, such as a 13mm x 13mm hole welded mesh, we would suggest a thicker 1.6mm wire to prevent the rats from breaking the welds to create a larger opening.
Which roll size should I choose to rat proof a standard soffit or loft vent?
The 30cm (12 inch) rolls, available in 30m lengths, are a good choice to rodent-proof soffits and vents, as well as airbricks. Alternatively, you can use the 90cm (36 inch) rolls which are available in 6m, 15m and 30m rolls. You can easily cut the rolls down to your exact measurements using a decent pair of wire or aviation cutters.
Is rat mesh difficult to install yourself, or do I need a pest control company?
No specialist skills are needed - you require wire cutters, gloves, and either a staple gun for timber or screws, washers and wall plugs for masonry. The mesh bends and holds its shape once cut, and the tools to install your fencing are relatively inexpensive and can also be used on other projects. However, we do advise speaking to a professional if you cannot safely access the areas that need proofing, or if you have a serious infestation which needs to be resolved before installing your rat-proofing.
Is Mesh Direct rat mesh the same specification pest control professionals use?
Yes, Mesh Direct's welded rat mesh is used by pest control professionals for domestic and commercial rodent proofing. The 6mm hole and wire gauges are the key requirements professionals specify, and both the stainless steel and galvanized options on this page meet them. In fact, we also supply our rat mesh directly to pest controllers in the UK.
