FAQs
What is 13mm x 13mm wire mesh used for?
13mm welded mesh is most commonly used for aviaries, fruit cages, bird-proofing, rabbit enclosures, chicken runs, and squirrel exclusion. We also recommend 13mm x 13mm for rat protection and for machine guards alongside agricultural and DIY garden applications. The 13mm hole is small enough to exclude small birds, squirrels, rabbits, and rats, while the rigid welded construction holds its shape under pressure. It suits both seasonal garden protection and permanent animal enclosures.
What is the difference between the lightweight 1mm mesh and the 16 gauge 1.6mm mesh?
The lightweight mesh uses 1mm wire and weighs 850 grams per square metre, it is suited to bird proofing, fruit cages, and rabbit runs where there is a low risk of foxes. The 16 gauge mesh uses 1.6mm wire and weighs 2,220 grams per square metre; we recommend the heavier option where squirrels, rats, or foxes are a regular problem, as the thicker wire is designed to resist chewing or breaking through the mesh. Also choose the heavier-weight option if you require a more rigid, panel-like material.
Is 13mm wire mesh strong enough to keep squirrels out of a fruit cage?
Yes, if you choose the 16 gauge (1.6mm) option. The 13mm hole size is correct, squirrels cannot squeeze through, but they will chew through lighter gauge wire (1mm) given enough incentive, particularly near soft fruit. The heavier wire prevents that. Secure all joins in the mesh with tie wire or cable ties to eliminate gaps.
Will 13mm x 13mm wire mesh keep rats out?
Yes, the 13mm x 13mm hole size is small enough to keep out rats and if you choose the heavier 16g wire this will prevent them from chewing through the mesh. If you are also looking to keep out mice then you will need to choose a rat-proof mesh with a smaller 6mm x 6mm hole.
Should I choose galvanised or stainless steel 13mm mesh?
For most outdoor uses, galvanised is cost-effective, durable and offers great rust resistance. Choose stainless steel if you would like an even longer-lasting material, or if you're building a small-bird aviary and you do not want the maintenance of washing down the aviary regularly with vinegar and water to decrease the chances of your birds getting zinc poisoning. Galvanised wire carries excess zinc, which can cause zinc poisoning in birds such as (but not limited to) budgies, canaries and finches if they mouth, lick or chew the wire.
