Woven stainless steel mesh is used for a large number of applications, including filtration, ventilation, machine guards, pest proofing. Woven 16 Mesh is a fine mesh with a small hole size, which is an excellent choice as a heavy-duty insect mesh. Given that the material is flexible, it may need the support of a frame to add rigidity.
The mesh count refers to how many holes there are on a linear inch on the material i.e. if you place a ruler on the mesh, our 16 Mesh would have 16 holes per linear inch.
We can offer either standard grade 304 stainless steel, or the higher quality grade 316 stainless steel (sometimes called Marine Grade). Grade 316 stainless steel contains molybdenum, which is added to boost its resistance to corrosion and should be selected if the material is to be used in a salt water or coastal environment. Please note that from time to time we may substitute grade 304 stainless steel for the higher quality grade 316 stainless steel (unless we are requested not to do so). Samples are supplied from off-cuts of the woven mesh, and so may alternate between Grade 304 and Grade 316 stainless steel.
The material is priced per linear metre on the website.
All measurements +/- 5%. If you require a micrometer reading of the wire thickness then please call us on 01782 820 970.
Hi, you kindly sent us some Stainless Mesh samples. The client is asking us what life span would be expected for a Marine Environment.
Please see below a link from the British Stainless Steel Association website which provides some information on lifespan:
As you can see, the estimate for corrosion to penetrate 1mm in a marine environment with grade 304 stainless steel would be approx. 145 years (as opposed to 260 years for grade 316). Although this seems like a long time, some pitting and staining of the grade 304 material may occur relatively quickly in a marine environment, which obviously has an impact from an aesthetic point of view.
Generally speaking, grade 316 stainless is the preferred option in marine environments. However, any stainless steel option will be preferable to a galvanized finish mild steel option.
Do you do a mesh for keeping mice out?
Thank you for the enquiry. The correct mesh for keeping out mice is our welded 6mm x 6mm wire mesh. We offer this mesh in either a galvanized finish, or a stainless steel finish.
If you are looking for an insect mesh which is also mouse proof, then I would suggest our woven stainless steel 16 Mesh, which is sold by the metre.
Dear Sir/Madam, I am in the process of replacing some mesh for louvered windows and want to source a mesh fine enough to keep out midges and strong enough to deter intruders. Please can you recommend a mesh that would meet these two criteria? Kind regards
Thank you for your enquiry.
In terms of the strength of insect mesh, there is nothing available that will offer security protection. By its nature insect mesh is relatively lightweight, and could be damaged if an intruder wishes to break through it.
In terms of the strongest insect mesh we offer, we have a stainless steel woven 16 mesh sold by the linear metre. This will keep the majority of insects out, however if you are concerned about very small midges then you may wish to consider a finer woven 40 mesh.
Whilst we describe the above woven meshes as our heavier insect mesh, please note that the mesh is not rigid i.e. a metre piece of the material would not stand up unsupported. If you would like to see a sample of the material then these are available to purchase on the website.
One other option you could consider would be to use a heavier welded mesh in front of the finer insect mesh.
Thank you for my mesh. It arrived really quickly and you were really helpful when i called.
