Description

Our 6mm x 6mm welded stainless steel mesh is the ideal choice for long lasting rodent protection. The 6mm x 6mm hole size is perfect for keeping out mice, and because stainless steel is a harder material than mild steel, the 0.7mm thick wire is thick enough to prevent mice and rats from chewing through the mesh. The 6mm x 6mm hole is also suitable for keeping out moles.

We have sold this mesh to a wide range of customers for rodent protection, including supermarkets, food manufacturers, and pest control companies. The mesh holds its shape well, but it can easily be bent by hand making it easy to work with.

Stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion, and therefore is longer lasting than a galvanized finish mesh. Stainless steel is commonly used in the food industry, but has a wide variety of applications where a higher level of rust resistance is required.

FAQ

FAQs

Does stainless steel mesh stop rats from chewing through it?

Yes, 6mm x 6mm hole stainless steel mesh stops rats. Grade 304 stainless steel is harder than galvanised mild steel, and the 0.7mm wire is thick enough to prevent rats from chewing through it. Galvanised wire can be worn down by persistent gnawing unless you use a thicker wire; stainless steel resists this because of the material's hardness. Mesh Direct supplies this mesh to pest control companies specifically for long-term rodent exclusion.

Will this mesh keep moles out if I bury it underground?

Yes. The 6mm x 6mm hole is small enough to keep moles out. Lay this mesh horizontally below the soil surface to protect lawns and planting beds. Grade 304 stainless steel offers the highest resistance to corrosion, making it the best long-term choice for a below-the-surface installation.

Is stainless steel mesh worth paying more for than galvanised when rodent-proofing?

It depends. Galvanized mesh relies on a hot dipped galvanized zinc coating that can wear down over a few years exposing the underlying mild steel. However it is cheaper and still offers a good level of rust resistance. Grade 304 stainless steel is an alloy which means that the entire wire is highly resistant to corrosion, including any cut ends. For damp locations such as air bricks, drainage channels, and soil lines, stainless steel outlasts galvanised significantly. Stainless steel is also worth purchasing if you need mesh for food areas as it is an easy product to clean.

Can this mesh be used in food factories or commercial kitchens?

Yes. Grade 304 stainless steel is the standard specification for food processing environments because of its corrosion resistance and the fact that it is easy to clean. We are a member of the British Stainless Steel Association and supply this mesh to food manufacturers and supermarkets for rodent exclusion. In a food environment stainless steel should be regularly cleaned down using warm water and an anti-bacterial soap solution. Avoid using harsh cleaning products containing bleach, as the chlorides will start to corrode the stainless steel.

Can I cut and install this mesh myself without specialist equipment?

Yes. Aviation wire cutters, which handle wire up to 1.0mm thick, cut this 0.7mm wire cleanly. If you add them into your basket on this page you also get a special discounted price. The mesh holds its shape well but bends easily by hand around corners, pipes, air bricks, and uneven edges. Wear gloves when handling cut ends, but no specialist tools are required other than a drill if you are fixing onto masonry or brickwork.

Will Grade 304 stainless steel mesh rust if left outdoors?

No. Grade 304 stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion and will not rust the way galvanised mesh does when its zinc coating wears through. The corrosion resistance runs through the entire wire, so scratches and cut edges do not create rust points. Over time, and in areas close to the coast, you may get a bit of discolouration known as tea-staining. This can usually be removed with occasional maintenance by cleaning with a warm water and soap solution.
