FAQ
FAQs
Will 6mm wire mesh stop mice getting into my house?
Yes, a 6mm x 6mm aperture is the industry standard for mouse exclusion, and this galvanised welded mesh is supplied to pest control professionals for exactly this purpose. The 0.65mm wire also prevents mice from chewing through the mesh, so sealing entry points creates a complete barrier. It is suitable for blocking gaps around pipes, under floors, and at wall openings where mice commonly gain access.
What thickness wire mesh do I need to keep rats out?
You need the extra heavy variant with 0.8mm wire on this page to keep rats out. The standard 0.65mm wire is suitable for mice and moles, but rats are stronger chewers and require the heavier gauge. Both variants share the same 6mm x 6mm hole size, so if you are dealing with both rats and mice, choose the 0.8mm extra heavy option.
Can mice chew through 0.65mm wire mesh?
Mice cannot chew through this mesh. The 0.65mm wire is too thick for mice to bite through, and the welded construction holds firm against repeated attempts to gnaw through the mesh. If you are dealing with rats rather than mice, you will need the extra heavy 0.8mm variant, as rats exert considerably more force when chewing and will work through the lighter wire.
Is this mesh suitable for covering air bricks and vents to keep rodents out?
Yes, this mesh is commonly fitted over air bricks, vent openings, and pipe entry-points for rodent-proofing. Rolls are 90cm high and can be cut to size using aviation wire cutters suitable for wire up to 1.0mm thick, which you can get for a special price when you purchase them with a roll of mesh on this page. We also stock ready-made vent and air brick covers if you prefer a pre-formed solution for mice, bees and wasps.
Will this mesh rust if it is fitted to an outside wall?
This mesh is designed for outdoor use and has a hot dipped galvanised finish to protect against rust. For most UK mainland locations it performs well in exposed conditions over the long term. If you are looking for the longest lasting material for outdoor projects our stainless steel 6mm x 6mm welded mesh offers an even higher level of rust-resistance.
Do pest control companies use this mesh for rodent proofing?
Yes, this is the industry standard for rodent proofing and we supply it to pest control companies and commercial operators including supermarkets. All stock is held in our warehouse in Stoke-on-Trent, so products listed as available are in stock and ready to dispatch. Mesh Direct holds a Feefo Platinum Trusted Service Award 2026, based on independently verified customer reviews.
